Who Is Jolene? The Real Story Behind Dolly Parton's Song

Reuben ·

Jolene is two real people stitched together. The story came from a red-haired bank teller who, in Dolly Parton's telling, developed "this terrible crush" on her new husband, Carl Dean. The name came from a different redhead entirely: a little girl, about eight years old, who asked Dolly for an autograph and said her name was Jolene.

So the woman in the song never existed as one person, and the real story is a lot sillier than the song sounds. Parton herself called it "an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one" in a 2008 interview with NPR.

People are asking again because of the Country Music Association's tribute show, I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton, held on October 21, 2026 at Belmont University in Nashville. Parton died on August 25 at 80, and Ella Langley's "Jolene" was one of the most talked-about moments of the night.

Who was the bank teller in Jolene?

Parton doesn't name her in any of the interviews we read, and the story she tells about her has stayed the same for years. Not long after she married Carl Dean (on May 30, 1966, in Ringgold, Georgia, according to the AP), a teller at his local bank started paying him a lot of attention, and Carl started enjoying his trips to the bank rather more than banking strictly requires.

It became a running joke in the house. Parton told NPR she used to tease him that they didn't have enough money to justify that many visits. There was no affair and, by her account, no real drama. The song takes that small bit of jealousy and blows it up into a woman begging a rival not to take her man.

The part that does ring true is the insecurity. Parton described the teller as tall, around six feet, with "everything I didn't, like legs." She has said that's why the song connects: almost everyone has felt outshone by somebody at some point.

Who was the little girl named Jolene?

This is the half of the story people tend to miss. Early in her career, Parton signed autographs after her TV tapings. One night a girl with red hair and green eyes came up to the stage. Dolly asked her name, the girl said "Jolene", and Dolly told her it sounded like a song.

She gave the bank teller that girl's hair, eyes and name. Parton's own interviews are the only firm source for this half of the story, and she doesn't give the girl's surname, so treat any "I found the real Jolene" article with a raised eyebrow.

When did Jolene come out, and how big was it?

"Jolene" was released in 1973 and became the title track of the Jolene album, which came out on February 4, 1974, per Dolly Parton's official site. The single was her second No. 1 on the country chart and a moderate pop hit in the US.

Britain took longer to catch on. The Official Charts Company shows it first charting in May 1976 and peaking at No. 7 that June. Then, 50 years later, after Parton's death, it climbed back into the UK Top 10 and reached No. 6 in September 2026, its highest UK position ever.

Year What happened
1966 Parton marries Carl Dean, the husband in the story
1973 "Jolene" released as a single
1974 Jolene album out on February 4; the song is a country No. 1
1976 Peaks at No. 7 in the UK
2014 Original recording inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame
2017 Pentatonix version with Parton wins a Grammy
2026 Back in the UK Top 10, peaking at No. 6 in September

The album also had "I Will Always Love You" on it as its second single, which went to No. 1 as well. That one wasn't about a romance at all: Dolly's site describes it as her public goodbye to Porter Wagoner when she left his TV show. Two country standards on one 1974 record is a decent year's work.

Why does Jolene sound so different from other country songs?

It's built on very little. NPR counted roughly 200 words, a lot of them repeats of the name itself. Parton put much of the song's pull down to the melody and the guitar figure under it, saying "people love that 'Jolene' lick." She also pointed out that a song that's mostly one word is one even a small child can sing along to.

The other trick is who's singing. The narrator isn't angry at Jolene and doesn't threaten her. She just admits she can't compete and asks her not to take him anyway. Country singer Mindy Smith, whose cover Parton once named as her favourite, told NPR she thinks the narrator is the real main character of the song, which is about right.

Who has covered Jolene?

Parton told NPR it's been recorded more than any other song she wrote. A few versions worth knowing:

  • Olivia Newton-John did a disco-leaning version in 1976.
  • The White Stripes made it a live staple, with Jack White flipping it so the redhead is his girlfriend cheating with a friend.
  • The Sisters of Mercy, of all people, did a goth version.
  • Pentatonix recorded an a cappella arrangement with Parton in a single day in 2016, and it won Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 2017 Grammys, as the Recording Academy recounts.
  • Beyoncé reworked it on Cowboy Carter in 2024, turning the pleading into swagger. Not everyone was sold: NPR's review said it "loses the original's power."
  • Ella Langley sang it at the October 2026 CMA tribute, after first performing it at a hometown show in Alabama days after Parton's death.

The tribute itself, which aired on ABC and streams on Disney+ and Hulu, had (per ABC News) Lady A on "Islands in the Stream" and Carly Pearce with Kristin Chenoweth on "9 to 5". But it was Langley, fresh off the record-breaking run of her own "Choosin' Texas", who sent people back to Google to find out who Jolene actually was.

Parton's reach went well past country, too. In Musicle's collaboration data she links to 209 different artists, from George Jones and Willie Nelson to Sting and Beyoncé, which is a lot of doors for one singer from the Smoky Mountains. You can poke around her connections on the Explore page.

Quick answers

Is Jolene a real person? Not as one person. She's a mix of a real bank teller and a real little girl named Jolene.

Did Carl Dean cheat with Jolene? No. By Parton's account it was a one-sided crush at the bank and a joke between the couple.

Did Dolly write Jolene and I Will Always Love You on the same day? She said so in a 2017 radio interview, then in 2022 admitted they "could have been a few days apart," as Mental Floss rounds up. Either way, both ended up on the 1974 Jolene album.

Was the song about Dolly's husband? Yes. Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years, is the man the narrator is trying to keep. He died in March 2025.
